Meet Ellen Hatala

Hello, I’m Ellen, a watercolor artist based in New Mexico. My work is deeply inspired by the natural world, especially the subtle rhythms of movement and the emotional pull of color. I combine detailed pen drawings with loose, flowing watercolor washes, allowing structure and spontaneity to coexist in each piece. This balance gives my paintings a sense of life and personality, inviting viewers to linger, explore, and form their own connections. Above all, I hope my work brings a feeling of joy and curiosity, adding warmth and a welcoming presence to the spaces where it lives.

My Artistic Approach

My artistic journey has taken me through a variety of mediums over the years. Silk painting, in particular, became a meaningful chapter in my practice, offering rich color and an element of surprise that I found incredibly rewarding. After relocating to New Mexico, practical space limitations encouraged me to shift my focus to watercolor on paper. What began as a necessity quickly became a passion. A first watercolor class in Santa Fe, centered on painting bugs, opened the door to a medium that felt both playful and endlessly expressive.

Mission Statement

Why I Create

Today, watercolor continues to challenge and delight me. I’m drawn to its unpredictability and the way it mirrors the organic forms and motion found in nature. Each piece is an exploration, guided by curiosity and a love of detail, with the hope that viewers feel the same sense of wonder and connection that inspires me to create.
